Old and New Seven Wonders of the World
Cairo – Sinai – Petra – Red Sea (8 days) |
||||
In a single trip you can combine visits to the Great Pyramids and Petra by travelling through the Sinai desert and finishing off with a dip in the beautiful underwater world of the Red Sea.
Best time to visit: October to April
The journey begins in Cairo which, of course, you cannot pass through without greeting the Pyramids and Sphinx which are salient reminders of the great achievements of ancient Egyptian civilisation. You will also get a glimpse of modern Cairo, full of different images, sounds, smells, cars and people crowding the streets. As a result, the next day after all this commotion of a city of 20 million people you will happily embrace the peace and solitude of the mountainous region of Sinai. From Cairo you will pass the Suez Canal and then move through the Sinai desert to St. Catherine. The place is famous for the Monastery of St. Catherine under Moses’ Mountain, the birthplace of the Ten Commandments. If you have enough stamina, we recommend a climb up the mountain for the beautiful view of the Sinai high mountain range, especially at sunrise.
The next day the trail will lead you through the White and Coloured Canyon all the way to Taba, from where a ferry will take you to Jordan the next morning. The drive from Aqaba to Petra offers some spectacular scenery, while in the ancient town of Petra you can also marvel at the sights of magnificent rock-carved buildings. Because you will stay overnight at Petra, there is the opportunity to explore the town at your own pace. The next day sees you tracing the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia through the Wadi Rum desert on the way back to Aqaba. On the Egyptian side we will proceed to Dahab, where you will get some well-deserved time to relax and enjoy the underwater world of the Red Sea. The day before departure you will drive back to Cairo and the last evening can be spent hunting for treasures at the famous Khan Al-Khalili Market in Old Cairo.
